G-Star by Marc Newson
View textThis collection sees the revival of a decades-long collaboration with G-STAR. Reissuing and revising 22 of Newson’s most iconic designs, the collection presents a specially curated selection for the denim brand. A project which began in 2004 as a creative challenge to reinterpret G-STAR’s signature jean, the project evolved into a groundbreaking collaboration which ran biannually until 2016. This collection reissues 22 standout, timeless pieces.
This collection feels more relevant now than ever before. It is really a matter of timing, the meeting of popular demand—and, above all, the contemporary resonance of the collection. It feels evocative and apposite.
I enjoy pushing boundaries and expectations in my work. This collection reflects my preoccupation with the multidimensionality of workwear—exploring and exploiting material properties, functionalities and representations. The collection draws on multiple, diverse areas of interest, with workwear acting as the expansive platform. The notion of incorporating utility into garments is a longstanding interest of mine; a concept I can relate to on a personal level. This collection can be said to represent the possibilities of workwear anywhere—a design language which speaks to, and for, functionality more broadly, rather than one informed by specific cultural or geographical boundaries.
Here, as in much of my work, I remain committed to communicating an honest synthesis between form and function: material integrity and utility. I am compelled to incorporate functional elements in a sincere way—with the intention of practical use, as opposed to elements which are merely gestural, peripheral additions.
In all my work I aspire to create something timeless—design which stands the test of time, rather than work which is time specific or dependent. And, in many ways, the relaunch of this diverse collection speaks to this notion of timelessness, with material choices playing a critical role in outcomes. Timelessness is a form of innovation—the value (in every sense) communicated through a truth to materials, utility, formal coherence and clarity of vision.
Tactility remains a fundamental, distinctive element. All my designs are, to a certain extent, imbued with a sense of texture, of implied touch—a means through which quality can be expressed.
G-STAR has both championed, evolved and elevated workwear as a fashion concept and statement: I deeply admire this commitment—and it’s a real pleasure to be a part of this enduring narrative. Dynamic, evocative and resonant: 20 years on, the collection has found another meaningful moment.
